Auckland Airport sits in Māngere, a short drive west of most South Auckland suburbs. From Manukau and Papatoetoe, the usual approach is along SH20B or SH20, and from Papakura, Takanini and Manurewa it is SH1 and then SH20. Both terminals are reached from the same airport road network.

Motorway routes: SH1 and SH20

The Southern Motorway (SH1) runs north through Papakura, Takanini, Manurewa, Manukau and Ōtāhuhu toward the city. The Southwestern Motorway (SH20) links Manukau to the airport and continues to Waterview for West Auckland.

• Into the CBD: SH1 north. It can be very busy at peak times, so allow extra time.
• To Mt Smart: Go Media Stadium is in Penrose, a short distance up SH1, which makes concerts and games an easy booking from the south.
• To the west: SH20 through the Waterview Tunnel to SH16.

• Auckland Botanic Gardens, Manurewa: large gardens, lawns and lakes that suit wedding, ball and graduation photos. Check the gardens’ own rules for organised photography before you go.
• Rainbow’s End area: the theme park sits next to Manukau, and the surrounding area can work as a meeting point for a birthday. Its opening days and access are separate from us, so check them yourself.
• Manukau Harbour shoreline: waterfront reserves in Māngere and Ōtāhuhu give open views for a quick stop.
