How does a New Year’s Eve limo work in Auckland?

New Year’s Eve is different from a normal night out. Streets close, crowds gather for the Sky Tower fireworks at midnight, and everyone wants to get home at the same time. A limo works well if the plan is built around that. Most groups choose one of three shapes:

Where do people watch the fireworks?

The Sky Tower fireworks can be seen from many parts of the city. Viewing areas that are typically busy include:

• Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter: waterfront bars and open spaces close to the tower.
• Quay Street and the downtown waterfront: central, and among the most crowded spots.
• Across the harbour: parts of the North Shore waterfront, such as around Devonport, usually have a view back to the city.

Some maunga, such as Maungawhau Mt Eden, have limited or no vehicle access to the summit, so plan for walking if you head to one.

Planning around road closures

Road closures and traffic changes in the CBD are likely on New Year’s Eve. Exact closures are usually announced closer to the date, so check the official event and transport information before the night. Then:

1. Choose a drop-off point on the edge of the busy area rather than right at the waterfront.
2. Agree a separate pickup point for after midnight, a few streets back from the crowds.
3. Share both points with everyone in the group, in case you get separated.
4. Put both points in the notes of your quote request.
5. Expect the trip out of the city after midnight to be slower than usual.

Late finishes and getting everyone home

After the fireworks, taxis and rideshares are in high demand and public transport is busy. A limo booked for the trip home takes that worry away. If your group lives in different suburbs, list each address and the order you would like, grouped by direction where you can, for example North Shore drops together and eastern suburbs drops together. More drop-offs take more time, so they affect the hours in your quote.
